Topic: TACKLING YOUR LIFE'S PASSIONS
connie headshot

Connie Nicholas Carberg broke barriers in the NFL as the league’s first female scout. It was her love for the game, not any attempt to be groundbreaking or prove a point, that got her there. Growing up around the team that she loved more than anything else in the world was a blessing for Connie. It all began when her father, Dr. Calvin Nicholas, became the New York Jets’ team internist (and would be for 24 more years). While she loved the game with all her heart, she never dreamed she could have a profession in this male-dominated industry. That didn’t stop her from continuing to learn from some of football’s greatest minds.

After high school, Connie attended Ohio State University and befriended 5-time National Champion Head Coach Woody Hayes. He took the young Connie under his wing, allowing her to attend every OSU practice, even those closed to the public.

After graduation, Connie was offered a job as a secretary with the Jets. She was the first face people saw when they entered Weeb Ewbank Hall. However, she hadn’t reached her goal yet. She showed her abilities as a talent evaluator and was promoted into the scouting department. In 1975, Connie made the first-ever selection by a woman in an NFL Draft (she chose Mike Bartoszek, in the 17th round, who survived numerous cuts).

Connie was named the first female scout in NFL history in 1976, by the famed player and coach Mike Holovak. Many of the best drafts in New York Jets history occurred with her support. In 1979, Connie discovered an unknown defensive end from Eastern Oklahoma, Mark Gastineau, and the Jets selected him in the 2nd round. Gastineau became a force of nature in the NFL, a 5-time pro-bowler, who held the NFL season sack record for 30 years. In 1980, Connie left the Jets to embark on a new journey with her husband, John, supporting his passions and starting a family together in Florida.

Connie still visits Jets training camp every year and has remained a relevant source of football knowledge. Her inspiring story has been featured on ESPNW, Washington Post, New York Times, NewYorkJets.com, Yahoo Sports, The Sporting News and more. Most recently, Connie released a book with Author Elisabeth Meinecke about her life as the NFL’s first woman scout. The nonfiction X’S and O’s Don’t Mean I Love You has been featured on ESPN, CBS, National Television and print publications and is available for purchase on Amazon, Kindle, iBooks and Nook.

Testimonials

“I have a favorite quote that I’ll share with you– it’s open to interruption..but goes like this….A rising tide lifts all boats…..I feel like PWA is in a great position to be that rising tide for many women.”

"I very rarely leave my office during the 9-5 hours. I feel that this time spent away from my office was very valuable."

“One thing is clear, women of Coral Springs are more than ready to come together for what we have to offer.  That is very exciting news and I feel confident, with our collective passion, we will be that “rising tide” for ourselves and all other women who join us!"

“The women at my luncheon table enjoyed the event immensely --- one remarked that there is absolutely no other place for her to listen to a motivating, quality speaker and network with 100 professional women, all for a low price of $25 !     Wow !    Thank you, all, especially Rebecca for your leadership and Cindy for your vision."

"I am so proud to be affiliated with this group.  Everyone in that room was hungry for good news and a little "sisterhood".

When you see a room full of woman AFTER the event is over, and no one wants to leave, I personally measure it as a successful gathering!"

"Everyone was very professional and friendly. I was put at ease immediately. Presenter was wonderful. I learned some excellent presenting tips" "What a great turn out! Coral Springs Chamber Rocks!"

"Our speaker committee is to be commended for securing the dynamic Ms. Robinson for yesterday's PWA luncheon. Great, great job ladies (as always). Your task is difficult, and you manage success each time!
Trina was correct -- the energy yesterday was positively electrifying... I'm so proud to be associated with all of you."
